Live-streaming is capturing the fascination of from celebrity to nobody and the aspiration of from service providers to investors. This is happening right in China where a recent live-streaming has glued more than 20 million to their laptops and smart phones and garnered over 100 million hits of likes from inside the country and out. Even a CEO live-streaming himself playing poker games during his private jet trip has intrigued the interests of over 300,000. This online fad is sweeping across China to be creating a new generation of online celebrities, ranging from the already-known's to the never-known's who both cherish the desire of revealing themselves and their daily lives to others, for fame or for fortune. Though opinions may differ as regards the definition of fame, the amounts of fortune do accumulate through the cashable tokens or gifts sent in also online by the viewers of these live-streamed shows from outdoor actions to such indoor activities as eating and even sleeping. Industry insiders have contributed the success of the fad to the advance of technology and the growing number of tech-savvy younger generation. "Firstly, more advanced devices and the penetration of broadband have provided a game-changer for the industry. Secondly, the variation of those born during and after the 1990s who tend to wire themselves onto smart phones is another game-changer," explains Feng Yousheng, founder and CEO of live-streamer Inke. The live-streaming fad has become so fabulous that a new live-streamer is born almost every five seconds. Almost all Internet service providers in China have joined the fray. They not only provide live-streaming platforms, but also started their own live-streamed shows. So far, there are already over 200 live-streaming platforms in the country and over 200 million proactive viewers, or one in every seven Chinese. Big money for big fame; that is just part of the equation. The other part is bigger investment for bigger fame. As the amount for contracting a top-notch live-streaming host or hostess has already doubled from 20 million yuan in 2014 to 40 million yuan this year, most live-streamers are working real hard to make their ends meet. This is because they have to pay real dearly for the broadbands which make live-streaming possible in the first place. Feng Yousheng, for one, has just managed to break even not so long ago, as the Inke CEO has to guarantee a viewer registration of 130 million to even out his expenditure of 1 billion U.S. dollars on broadband facilities. "Live-streamers are still trying to grab their market shares in the form of advertising and marketing inputs which can cost a fortune," says Feng. The cost of contracting online bloggers famous and attractive enough to help live-streamers garner and maintain more loyal viewers can also be enormous. "It may look inconceivable to many, but as an industry insider, I know what they have done and achieved. They have projected themselves into a similar stardom as those top-notched movie and television stars. So they deserve their share of payment," says Dou Yuxiao, executive vice-president of Panda TV. For live-streaming hosts and hostesses, contents help them to maintain if not prolong the attention span of their viewers. Shi Yue, as a starting live blogger, believes that only lasting contents will outlast those erotic and unsavory shows. "To me, content is of utmost importance. Bizarre broadcasts may attract some attention for some time. But for those who want to pursue an industry career, they should deliver an inspirational message and offer high-quality contents through detailed planning," says Shi Yue.
