WesTex Shredding Hard Drives at its Headquarters facility in Lubbock, Texas. Notice how the sparks rain down inside the shredder. Many companies will tell you they can shred hard drives on their basic mobile shredding trucks and technically they can, however, like our plant based hard drive shredder, mobile shred trucks will create sparks as what you will see in this video. Shredding hard drives on a mobile shred truck (designed for paper) is dangerous for several reasons. First, if the company that is shredding for you already has shredded paper on the truck, they stand a great risk of creating a smoldering paper fire inside the shred compartment. These shredding companies won't know about the fire until it's too late. When they open the back door to begin baling the paper, the air hits the paper, the embers in the paper flare up and create a fire that will either immediately flash or could continue burning for numerous hours. More than likely the truck and its contents will be a total loss. Secondly, if the fire in the shred compartment is intense enough at the time of hard drive shredding and it catches on to enough paper (fuel) with the oxygen already in the compartment, you could have a flash fire on your premises or while the truck is driving down the road. This will subject your paper files or paper files of other clients who had shred done that day on that truck to become open to the public (depending on wind) and could create a data breach. There are specifically designed shred trucks on the market which specifically shred paper in one compartment while shredding hard drives in a completely separate compartment. Don't take the chance of having your paper media and electronic media creating an event which could put you or other businesses further at risk. Do your Due Diligence on your vendor and find out what their methods are. WesTex Document will pick up your computers, hard drives, or any other type of electronic device or media you may have at your location record the serial numbers and verify the quantity and place them in specially designed hard drive containers to be brought back to the warehouse for immediate shredding. Or you have the option of bringing your media to us. Once our Gaylord box is filled, we ship the shredded contents to a precious metals recycler in California who then extracts all of the gold, platinum, and other precious and non-precious metals, as well as plastics for future use.
