They are usually blue but one in Glasgow used to be red until the 1960s. They are actually like a BAT PHONE - a direct link to police headquarters so that people could call the police easily in the days before mobile phones and CB radios. There are smaller versions too but the larger ones like the TARDIS can be seen outside Earls Court Station and also Hendon Police Training college (visible from the train line).
